Registering your songs with a performing rights organization (PRO) like BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc.) is essential for independent artists to ensure they receive royalties for their work. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to properly register your song with BMI:

Step 1: Join BMI as a Songwriter and Publisher


Before you can register your songs, you need to be a member of BMI. Here’s how to join:


  1. Visit the BMI Website: Go to BMI's website.

  2. Sign Up as a Songwriter: Click on "Join BMI" and select "Songwriter." Fill out the necessary information, including your personal details and tax information.

  3. Sign Up as a Publisher: To collect all the royalties due to you, it’s also a good idea to sign up as a publisher. Repeat the process by selecting "Publisher" and provide the required information.

Gather all necessary information about your song. This includes:


  1. Song Title: The exact title of your song.

  2. Genre: The genre of your music.

  3. Duration: The length of the song.

  4. Release Information: Details about the release date and any associated album or single.
